Students at Selwyn College fill out a form at the beginning of each semester listing which papers they are studying. Tutors are hired on the basis of demand.
Selwyn's tutors are high-achieving and personable academics. As such, they are excellent role models to the students, showing through their own time at university how to balance sporting, cultural, community and social aspects of their life, while still achieving outstanding grades. The College is fortunate to have many tutors returning year after year, thanks to residents' great interest and participation in the tutorial programme. Most of our tutors are Honours or Postgraduate students.
Selwyn's tutorial programme provides real value to residents' academic pursuits in their first and second years of university study, and this is evident from the high level of achievement at the College.
Generally tutors provide an on-site tutorial at the College each week. Each session elaborates on topics and addresses concerns arising from material taught in class that week. From time to time, with the agreement of the Senior Tutor, extra tutorials are scheduled for a number of papers in the run-up to important tests and exams. Selwyn College also offers a number of Peer Learning Groups (PLGs). PLGs bring together students studying the same subject so that they can assist each other with their learning. Whilst our formal Tutorials are delivered by later year and Post Graduate students, the Peer Learning Groups are more informal and once established only have the occasional support of a tutor. The College supports both the Tutorials and the PLGs network with resources.
